ATMs and Their Effect on Your Poker Play

September 19th, 2008

During many, many hours of playing online poker, it is apparent to me that a large amount of people love draws, even if they are of a very low percentage.

For whatever reason, there are quite a few poker players out there who, once they get four to the flush or a bellybuster straight draw, can’t resist chasing those draws no matter how statistically improbably they are. Even if pot odds dictate that in no way is chasing this straight worth it to you, many players will.

Well, that’s a good thing for people who like to make money when they play poker. It’s always good to have these people at your table. They will virtually hand chips to you throughout the session, and when they do hit one of their draws, these players almost invariably always give it away by overbetting them (don’t you love the guy who goes all in for $50 on a $3 pot when a potential flush hits the board?)

If you read any poker strategy book, or if you ever took any beginner level poker strategy course, one of the first things you are taught is not to wantonly chase draws, and about the value of pot odds. Let people who don’t pay attention to these minor details be your virtual ATM machines.

Poker Dreams and What They Mean

July 24th, 2008

Do you toss and turn to the sound of poker chips cascading across the soft, green felt of a poker table. Do you dream about sitting in a smoky poker room, surrounded by the likes of Johnny Chan and Chris Moneymaker? Or maybe clicking away in an online poker room?

If you do, your poker dreams could mean something. First of all, you need to ask yourself a few things. Do you play poker constantly, even at work on your PC? If so, this is probably seeping into your REM sleep cycle. It’s most likely the unconscious desire to play poker manifesting itself as a dream. Maybe you play too much. How can you tell? Well, are your poker dreams riddled with guilt, or perhaps less subtly, with loss after loss? This could be your subconscious mind telling you to dial it down a bit. Real world indicators could also help diagnose why you’re dreaming about poker so often. Are you having trouble scraping up enough cash to play poker games? Pay bills? The guilt from this could be invading your dreams.

Or, maybe you just really want to play more poker. If you can control your dreams, or make them more lucid, try and strategize your real-world hands and play them out in your dream. This way you can practice and get a good night’s sleep - all at the same time!

Role Playing Games–Character Guide 6

April 2nd, 2008

Introduction: The majority of role playing games available rely on dice to create a system of random chance. As such, one can never truly predict how things will go. Even an attacker, blaster, or speedster can’t guarantee victory before the foe gets a chance to make a crucial attack. Even an achiever, trickster, or defender can’t assume that a foe will never succeed to score a hit. Eventually, sometimes even often, characters will take hits. If anything in an RPG is guaranteed, it is this simple fact.

How to deal with it? Play a tanker. Tankers are the characters who take the hits and keep on going. They do not fall easily, do not succumb to single blows. All tankers are alike in their ability to take the hits, but in some games, they also heal rapidly over time, making them virtually impossible to wear down through attrition and compounding their incredible stamina with constant recuperation.

In Quests of the Realm, tankers are represented by the endure preference.

Player Tactics: The tanker, like the defender, is primarily a protective specialty. In QoTR, tankers supplement their stamina with some functional options. They can sacrifice their resilience to improve their actions, and can ignore some of the penalties that come from being badly injured (and, indeed, gain bonuses instead!) This isn’t always the case, however, and being able to take a lot doesn’t matter much if you can’t likewise dish it out.

The tanker, thus, is a specialty that helps to maximize other advantages more than granting benefits of its own. Since a tanker doesn’t fall easily, it has more chances to make use of its abilities. When other characters are falling back to get healing, the tanker is still going strong, possibly even stronger than it was in the beginning of the fight.

A tanker should never go for minimal impact. Do whatever you can to pester your enemies so they turn their attention onto you. As with a defender, your value to the party, other specialties aside, is strongly limited if foes elect not to attack you. On the other hand, don’t let the value of your strength defeat itself. Tankers are hard to take downbut not impossible. You want to draw attacks off of your allies, but much as with a user, if you rely too heavily on your ability to resist hard, it will be used up when you need it later.

Although any combination can prove effective, tankers do lend themselves to certain other specialties. A user/tanker, used wisely, is a master of winning through attrition. A blaster/tanker might risk a high chance of burnout, but played with some caution, can devastate the enemy force without fearing being taken down quickly due to the perceived threat of blasters. An enhancer/tanker, able to take the hits and heal, is virtually immortal on the field, while a defender/tanker is not only hard to hit, but also requires more hits to drop (and may be able to lower the damage of those hits it takes, to boot).

GM Tactics: Tankers share many of the same advantages of defenders for villain design. They make great boss opponents, especially if a lot of the players have high-damage characters that would otherwise eradicate a boss in one or two hits. If tankers can gain in effectiveness as they are injured (as in QoTR), the challenge of such a battle increases as the characters get closer to winning, not unlike in some video game RPGs.

Attacker/tanker fodder opponents are a pretty safe bet. Since they are lower level than the party, their ability to take more hits and deal more harm make them credible threats. And, since their tactics are straightforward, the GM can use them without having to worry about complicated strategy. As with defenders, though, tanker fodder can mean a much longer battle. On the flip side, they’re a great choice if the party contains a slightly-too-effective blaster.

Tanker elites can prove effective, especially if combined with more powerful allies. A trickster/achiever boss, for example, with a couple of tanker elites can make for an interesting challenge. All in all, the tanker specialty is among the best choice for villainsit makes them effective without making them unnecessarily devastating, and nicely complements any other specialty they have.

Tankers can take the hits and keep on fighting. They lack powerful offensive abilities of their own, but if they have a halfway decent fighting specialty to back them up, they can win their fights through attrition. Players should value the added survivability of tankers, since a player’s character is naturally subject to more attacksand more successful attacksover the course of a long-running game than any individual villain. However, enemies too can benefit from a tanker’s capabilities, allowing them to actually stay in the fight long enough to cause an effect, even against a group of high-damage characters.

Xbox 360 - Why is Microsoft So Slow to Release More?

March 24th, 2008

The Microsoft Xbox 360 is by far one of the most talked about video gaming systems of all time. With all of its capabilities and advanced technology it has lived up to all the hype. Or has it?

It’s hard to tell how great the Xbox 360 is because only a limited amount of people have been able to get their hands on one due to Microsoft’s limited release. In late November of 2005 Microsoft shipped its first batch of Xbox 360s and then made no comment of when they would release more. The majority of people see no reason why Microsoft would due this. With so many people anxious to buy one, why wouldn’t Microsoft keeping releasing more?

There are a couple of good reasons for the limited release. The main reason is that it creates scarcity, which then creates an enormous buzz. If consumers knew that Microsoft was going to keep releasing more and more Xbox 360s they would have felt no reason to buy one right away. However, since everyone knew that there would be a limited release you had people lining up outside stores days in advance just for a chance to get one. Of course this led to an incredible buzz that surrounded the Xbox 360. Every news station, newspaper and online media outlet was running huge stories about the Xbox 360. Due to all of the news coverage, one would have to be living in a cave to not know what the Xbox 360 is.

The second reason is simple supply and demand. The low supply of the Xbox 360 matched with the incredibly high demand resulted in the ability to charge higher prices. Microsoft priced the Xbox 360 at $399. For most people this is a large investment but since everyone was worried that they may have to wait months to buy one they acted like $399 was a bargain. For weeks after the Xbox 360 was released people were buying systems off of eBay for over $1000! That is the power of low supply and high demand.

No one really knows for sure when the next batch of Microsoft Xbox 360s will be released. However, everyone knows that they better buy one fast when they are released because of what happened in November of 2005. It seems that Microsoft’s release schedule has created just the market they were looking for.
