Flooring Considerations

November 19th, 2008

There are many factors which need to be thought about when choosing what kind of

href="http://www.yourfloors.co.uk">flooring to go for. Getting new flooring put in in your home

can breathe new life into it and can be a great way to improve your living environment. It may not

be as expensive as you think either.

An important factor when choosing flooring is what the role of that room is. Flooring which makes

sense for the dining room may not be suitable for the bathroom or kitchen for example. Some of the

most widely used types of flooring are carpet, vinyl, wood, and laminate.

Laminate flooring can be a fantastic substitute for wooden flooring if you are looking to achieve a

wood effect floor for a fraction of the price. Laminate flooring consists of a sheet of MDF with a

wood-effect plastic surface fixed to it. One pitfall of laminate flooring is that whilst it is

scratch resistant once it is scratched it is not possible to repair. Apart from that it can still be

a perfect choice for a kitchen, where the plastic coating provides an easy to clean surface.

Conversely solid wood flooring would not be advisable in a bathroom, or in fact any room which is

likely to get very wet. Some woods are particularly sensitive to moisture such as beech.

If you are planning to install a wooden floor, its critical you have the right surface to fit it

on. An ideal surface would be flat, and dry. There are options however to resolve uneven flooring

issues, such as laying ply throughout, or employing an underlay to create a floating

floor.

More often than not laminate flooring is sold as a product you can fit together yourself which is a

great way of keeping costs down. Solid wood flooring requires however a higher degree of DIY

competence, so it can sometimes be advisable to get solid wooden floors fitted professionally which

on the downside can add a considerable cost.

Something many people do not realise when they measure their room to work out how much flooring they

will need ” is that it is important to include a 10mm gap around the edge of the room for the wooden

flooring to expand and contract.

As a fundamental part of any interior design strategy, it is important to choose the correct

flooring. Whilst wooden or laminate floors can be ideal ” often for a more chic minimalist look;

carpet can be a better option if you are trying to achieve a more traditional home feel. The

important thing is you take into account the various factors you need to consider before ordering

new flooring.

Leather Is A Great Choice In Your Decor

June 7th, 2008

Are you tired of waiting for your children to grow up so you can finally let go of your tired, worn couch? Have a real dining room set? Or even lighter toned furnishings?

If you thought that having a family meant putting your decorating skills and ideas on the back burner then you just haven’t been opening your eyes to the stylish ideas designers use to liven up their own homes and their client’s homes, even with children (and pets) around!

CHOOSING MATERIALS

Choosing the right material can make all the difference when furnishing a home for a family.

Have you always loved leather? Well it’s not only great for minor spills that are quickly wiped off, it also wears well, even gaining a beautiful patina with time and use. Leather does not collect pet hair as a cloth couch or chair would, and crumbs and dirt will wipe off easily.

If you prefer fabric upholstery, think of luxurious Ultrasuede. Sophisticated enough for even the most formal rooms, it looks belie the easy care of the material. You won’t deal with fading or staining the way you are accustomed to with cotton, and many stains will come off quite easily with a damp cloth.

Do you have real ruffians running around? You can always count on slipcovers if you need to. Many decorators have used white or cream slipcovers to good effect, although you may consider a stripe or other pattern to disguise everyday wear. And because you can clean them thoroughly by removing them you do not have to be too concerned about occasional messes.

Slipcovers also work well on fancy dining room chairs and can be removed for adult-only dinner parties.

Try to stay away from delicate materials like silks or velvets which stain easily and are difficult to clean.

SAFE CHOICES

If you have small children you may also consider choosing soft furnishings, like ottomans, to replace hazards such as hard edged coffee tables.

Area rugs can be great for keeping light colored carpets in good shape, but be certain they rest flat so children are not prone to trip over them. Selecting heavy rugs or using a special padding underneath to reduce movement would be especially recommended when using rugs on hard, slippery surfaces.

When choosing wood furnishings, light or dark, be sure it has a protective clear coat so that marks and spills do not ruin the finish.

PROVIDING CHILDREN WITH THEIR OWN SPACE

Would your children really mind an ‘adult’ space in the home? If you make most of the home child-friendly, then it is not outside of reason to create one area specifically for adult entertaining or relaxing. Giving children a small area within the adult room where they can read books or sit at a small table for quiet games will teach them to respect and take care of nice things. This, along with making reasonable choices for the rest of the home, allows all in the family to enjoy their surroundings and each other.

Decorating with Brains

May 29th, 2008

Did I get your attention? Sorry, I just couldn’t resist!
When I was a little girl, we called them “brains”. We would gather them into huge piles and either throw them into the woods or throw them at each other.

I know what you are probably thinking, “That must have hurt!” It did but it never slowed us down. Still don’t know what I am talking about? I am fondly remembering the grapefruit sized, green, brain-like fruit that my siblings and I used to collect by the dozens each fall.

I ended up having two boys and when they were little they did the same thing I did years earlier; they threw them at each other. Of course I yelled words of caution but it never slowed them down either. Around that time I started to collect the “brains” and used them for fall decorations in my house. They have a pleasant smell and they are said to act as a natural insect repellant, although I am not sure if this is a proven fact.

I would gather several of them and place them into a carved wooden bowl or a natural looking basket. Next came the fun part, gathering the other things to go into my display. It varied each year but I would take a walk and collect natural grasses, colorful leaves or whatever captured my fancy. I would bring my “loot” home and create a unique looking arrangement each time.

They even look great by themselves too. One year I dumped an armload of them into a wooden crate and placed it next to my front door for a colorful fall display.

Fall has always been my favorite season, and collecting my next batch of “brains” is something I always look forward to. Several days ago while I was out gathering some, it occurred to me that I didn’t even know the real name of these funny looking green orbs. After a little bit of searching I discovered they are called Hedgeapples and these non-edible, non-poisonous fruits come from a tree called the Osage Orange Tree.

As you read this article, you are either shaking your head saying, “Oh yeah, I know what she is talking about.” or quite possibly you have never seen a hedgeapple in your life. If you are curious and would like to see pictures, please visit me at http://www.flowers-and-garden.com/decoratingwithbrains.php

This fall collect a few “brains” and create a beautiful fall display of your own!

NEW CONSTRUCTION WINDOWS OR REPLACEMENT WINDOWS? WHICH IS RIGHT FOR YOU?

May 10th, 2008

Hello, my name is John Rocco. I grew up around the window and
door business. My father owned a glass shop that dealt in every
aspect of residential and commercial glass. Naturally, when it
came time to choose a profession, I wound up in the window and
door business. I have been in the business for about 27 years,
and I have been self employed for 20.

One of the things that separated my company from my competitors
was my willingness to show my customers how to replace their
windows themselves. Whenever I would encounter a customer with a
curiosity or willingness to learn how to install their own
windows, I would offer to sell them the labor on one
window, using them as my helper. Then, they would install the rest
of the windows using the knowledge gained from helping me
install one. Most window companies would never do this because
there is so much money made on the labor. But I was always so
busy, I never felt like it was costing me money.

Eventually, I made an installation video for those homeowners
who wanted to do their own windows. While the video is for sale
on my website, I decided to take excerpts from
the video and write an article once a week covering some part of
the window replacement project. This article is going to cover
the difference between window frames used in new construction
homes, and the window frames that are used to replace existing
aluminum or wood windows.

When a new home is being built, the windows are nailed to the
wood studs that make up the house frame. In order to accomplish
this, new construction windows have a fin around all four sides
of the frame that rests against the outside of the stud and
nails are driven into the studs through the nailing fin. After
that, flashing paper is applied to prevent water leaks, then the
exterior material is applied. That material can be stucco,
brick, siding, etc.

Now,imagine 10 or 20 years later when you want to replace those
windows. If you were going to install your replacement windows
the same way the original windows were installed, you would have
to remove the exterior material around each window in order to
get to those nails holding the frame in there. You can see how
this procedure could cause many problems, not to mention all the
labor involved. I have seen homes in california with stucco
exteriors where the homeowner had the stucco cut out in order to
remove the old windows. The problem was they were unable to
match the stucco colors after patching. Its just not a very
efficient way to replace windows. So the replacement frame was
designed.

In most parts of the country it’s simply a new construction
window frame with the nail fin removed. In the west, where
stucco is a common home exterior,a retrofit frame was designed.
If you’re going to be replacing the exterior material on your
home, then you might want to consider going with the new
construction window, since the nailing fins will be exposed
anyway. Also, chances are that a contractor will be doing your
exterior replacement, and it would be wise to let the contractor
install the windows as well. Since my installation videos deal
with window replacement only, these articles will focus on
replacement frames and retrofit frames. Using these two frame
styles, a do it yourselfer can replace their old windows without
any damage to existing interior and exterior surfaces. And the
job can be done using common tools such as a drill, tape measure,
and caulking gun.

If you have any questions about anything in this article, you
can send me an email.

3 Benefits of Owning a Patio Awning

April 16th, 2008

More and more of us each year try harder and harder to enjoy the outdoors and the warm days of summer without having to leave our own backyard. Back yard pools are becoming more popular as prices become more affordable. Even gazebos and sunrooms are increasing in popularity. These are all great ideas to enjoy your backyard. One idea that now is also becoming main stream in household owners is the patio awning. Below are the 3 top benefits of owning a patio awning.

Protection

The number one benefit of owning a patio awning is protection. Many properties have patio doors leading onto the patio or deck. Unfortunately, this area by most property owners is not being used to its full advantage. Basically, the area is useless when it rains or if the sun and its harmful rays are not your cup of tea. Having a patio awning will eliminate both of these issues and provide you with more enjoyable usage of your patio or deck. With the shelter that the awning provides, you may sit outside and still enjoy the fresh air and sounds of the outdoors with out getting wet or worrying about harmful UV rays from the sun. Also, any patio furniture you own is now protected from these weather conditions.

More Living Area

With the added protection as mentioned previously, you now have just expanded your living area. You may now be outside and enjoy a nice dinner and entertain your guests without the worry of a rain shower. Your guests will enjoy the comfort of being shaded from the sun and take in the beauty of your backyard. The awning will basically give you a second dining room as well as living room and you will be able to enjoy all your meals outside under the protective awning canvas.

Price

A benefit of the patio awning is that you do not need to break the bank to own one. As opposed to getting a pool or gazebo to add value and cosmetics to your house, choosing an awning can be the logical choice if you are on a tight budget. There are many companies that offer pre-made awnings that come in different sizes, fabrics, and colors that will probably more than suit your needs.

A simple investment in owning a patio awning can make a great difference in how you spend your days and evenings in your backyard.

How To Select The Right Area Rug

April 12th, 2008

Area rugs can make such a beautiful contribution to any room and
they are often the first thing that catches the eye as as you
walk into the room. In view of that, doesn’t it make sense to
select and choose the right area rug for each room of your home?

Of course, area rugs come in almost every size, shape and color
combination imaginable, but a lot will depend on what the
intended use is for the rug and the budget that you have to work
with. In times past, only hand made rugs were considered to be
of high quality and able to stand up to constant use and heavy
wear, but thankfully advances have been in rug manufacturing and
today’s machine made area rugs can offer a lot for the money as
well.

In fact, for most people machine made rugs can be the best
solution all around as they offer solid and durable construction
and an incredibly wide choice of styles and patterns at very
affordable prices that can range from fifty dollars up to a
couple thousand dollars. If the rug will be used in a room that
is not dedcorated with fine furniture and accessories, why spend
the money for the most expensive rug to put on the floor? On the
other hand, if your room is filled with very high quality
furnishings, why would you want to to put down an area rug that
does not fit with it’s surroundings?

Hand made area rugs are still considered the best available area
rug product and they possess a look and feel that is superior to
most machine made rugs. You will find that most handmade rugs
use high quality wool for construction simply because wool seems
to last much longer and stand up to heavier amounts of traffic
than most other fibers. So pay attention to the material used to
make the rug.

The weaving process of a hand made rug can be important too as
the more densely the knots are placed together the higher
quality of the rug. This is referred to as knots per square inch
and hand made carpets can boaast a weave density of anywhere
from 300 - 750 knots per square inch.

Of course, such high quality hand made area rugs can be very
expensive, but if used in the correct surroundings and treated
as a piece of fine furniture that is cared for properly, they
will last for many years and look incredibly beautiful while
doing so.

So when you choose an area rug, first determine where it will go
and try to match the decor of that room as much as possible,
then choose the level of quality that will match your budget,
and you will be able to make a wise choice.

Installing a Shower Pan Membrane Liner for a Custom Ceramic Tile Shower

March 24th, 2008

Installing a custom ceramic tile shower in your home is something a do it yourself homeowner can do with a little upfront knowledge. The most important aspect of a successful custom ceramic tile shower installation is properly installing a shower pan membrane liner. The shower pan membrane liner is used to ensure a leak-proof shower.

Shower pan membrane liners are used to funnel any water that seeps through the floor or wall grout to the shower drain below. The shower pan membrane liner is made up of a flexible type of plastic material that sits below a bed of mortar, and the tile, in the shower floor area.

Prior to installing the shower pan membrane liner, the floor of the shower needs to be pre-sloped to ensure that the water will flow towards the shower drain assembly. The pre-slope is accomplished by applying a layer of mortar to the floor of the shower unit area. The layer of mortar is troweled in such as way as to create a gentle slope from the shower wall edges to the center of the shower where the drain resides.

Once the pre-slope mortar has cured, the flexible shower pan membrane liner can then be installed. There are a couple of types of shower pan membrane liners on the market, with each having their own benefits. With either type of membrane, the homeowner needs to form and fold the material into the base of the shower area and secure it to the sides of the shower wall frame with staples and/or nails. In addition, an opening in the membrane should be cut out to allow the adjustable shower drain assembly to slip through.

With the shower pan membrane installed, the cementitious ceramic tile backerboard can then be secured to the framed shower walls. The backerboard is a rigid material that is ideal for attaching tile in wet areas such as a shower stall.

After installing the ceramic tile backerboard, a final coat of mortar needs to be applied on top of the membrane to protect it and to provide a solid base for laying the ceramic floor tile.

With the final coat of mortar cured, the ceramic tile can then be installed in the shower.

Once the tile and grout have been installed, the shower drain assembly should be adjusted so that the drain height sits flush with the finished ceramic tile floor.

For more information on installing a shower pan membrane liner, see the Shower Pan Membrane Liner Installation EBook from HomeAdditionPlus.com. The Shower Pan Membrane Liner EBook will quickly teach you the step-by-step process for installing the shower pan membrane liner correctly. It includes instructions on framing the shower stall, pouring the pre-slope and shower base mortar, and installing the shower pan membrane liner.
