How Self-Made Millionaires Overcome Procrastination

October 31st, 2008

Do you want to know how the super successful overcome procrastination?

One fascinating hallmark of all highly motivated millionaires is their strongly held conviction that they will succeed. Whatever it takes and despite any challenges that crop up. How do they overcome procrastination?

People who are inspired by their dreams believe with certainty they will achieve their goals even if they do not know how all the details will work out. This sense of certainty is due in part to their empowering belief system and also to the way they represent their goals to themselves inside their minds.

Have you ever got excited about your goals and then slowly over time lost your enthusiasm? Most people do.

The difference is that the winners in life are able to relight that passion and desire to keep on going until they get what they want.

What are these rich and successful people doing differently to everyone else? They know how to build an internal state of certainty that they will succeed despite any short-term challenges. This overcome procrastination.

You can have this same sense of certainty by visualizing your top five goals as already achieved at least once a day. Picture your goals as already achieved and enjoy the feelings of satisfaction.

Hear people complimenting you on your success and really soak up the feelings of success. Make the pictures, sounds and feelings as lifelike as possible. Keep going until you feel with certainty that you will achieve this goal — as sure as the sun will rise in the morning!

When you do this you will overcome procrastination.

If the success of the goal seems uncertain play with the picture in your mind until it does feel certain. Compare how you picture, hear and see your goal with your expectation that the sun will rise tomorrow. Making the picture bigger, closer, brighter and more colorful usually helps to make it seem more realistic.

When you do this each day you are telling your unconscious mind to keep searching for ways to achieve your goal and you will consistently be motivated. You will also find that your intuition guides you and presents you with ideas that will help you to move ahead.

It used to bother me picturing my goals as already achieved to the point of certainty…

Overcome procrastination each day by doing this.

I feared that it would make me lazy since my brain would believe the goal would just turn up. And I used to think if I thought of the goal as certain I would be fooling myself into believing I would achieve it despite immediate evidence to the contrary.

However the opposite is true.

That sense of certainty propels you forward to create what you are imagining. Plus when you are off target it stands out a mile because your results are so inconsistent with your expectations. You are then compelled to get back on track.

Like an artist expressing himself with paints you can become an artist creating your goals in the world around you from the inspiration inside your mind.

You will never have a 100% guarantee that you will succeed however the more certain you feel about your future the more energy you will invest in achieving your goals. And the corresponding actions you take will naturally improve your chances of success.

A number of years ago I saw Donald Trump, the New York property developer, getting interviewed on TV. I paid close attention to the way he communicated as well as to what he said. He positively exuded certainty when he spoke about his next big development. Every fiber of his being proclaimed that the new venture would be a huge success.

Trump exudes certainty and this success aura attracts investors and encourages other people to believe in his vision. You can be sure that when he pictures his goals he does so with certainty. Start small if you like and as your confidence grows build up to bigger goals.

Remember to make this a daily habit and you will be able to keep on going even at times when you face setbacks.

You will finally overcome procrastination.

Creating Balance Form the Inside Out

October 30th, 2008

When I was younger, my mother and other adults used to say “The older you get, the faster life will go”, and my younger self would think, “Maybe for some people, but not for me.” But, as much as I thought I would be immune from this route, they were right, life is moving faster and faster the older I get. As an adult and as a life coach, I often hear the exclamation “I just want to slow my life down so I can figure out what I really want and maybe smell the roses a bit more along the way.”

As we get older, we tend to get caught up in all our “grown up” responsibilities. Kids, career, significant other, friends, housework, holidays, taking care of the yard, volunteer work, meetings, appointments, changing the oil on the car, etc… All leaving us so tapped that it’s hard to imagine fitting in any time for ourselves. Or when we do, we’re too tired and settle for vegging out in front of the TV. Before we know it, another year has passed and we never got around to living that great life we are always hoping for.

Then we hear about this thing called life balance and wonder if that could be the ticket out of this chaotic life and into a life that more resembles our own deepest desires, hopes and dreams from years ago.

When thinking about this topic, I realized that many of my clients come to me to create more balance in their lives, or with issues that are symptoms of an unbalanced life, like job dissatisfaction, time management, stress reduction, lack of motivation, no time for self, a search for meaning, etc…

I have found through research and discovery that there are essentially two ways to approach having a balanced life. We can choose to approach life balance from the outside in or from the inside out. The first approach is to drive yourself even crazier by trying to achieve an illusive, mythical, and societal ideal of balance. You might recognize this one. It’s the approach where you take a certain amount of time each day or week and allot it to each area of life (e.g., work =8 hours, exercise= 0.45 hours, family=2.6 hours, etc…). This works for a day or two until something unexpected comes up and takes you completely out of your routine and back to feeling out of balance. It’s the approach where we really believe the influences of the media and our culture that we can do it all-work, home, family and get enough sleep! This approach is also the one where our culture demands that women be both professional high achievers and traditional June Cleaver moms/wives and makes you feel as if at any moment, if we do something wrong, we are judged as inadequate and once again a complete failure in either department.

Wow, it makes you despise the words life balance doesn’t it? This approach is surprisingly touted by many well-meaning self-help professionals. It is an approach based on “shoulds” (things you think you ought to want), judgment (from self and others), and ignores the fact that the achievement of a whole picture perfect life is entirely unrealistic.

The second, more sane approach to life balance, is to not let ourselves be influenced by cultural ideals and social pressures, to stop comparing ourselves to others with unequal situations, and to recognize that balance is not static, but dynamic and constantly in motion, like our lives. That it’s a process, not an accomplishment, and it requires some flexibility!

When I was young, I had a unicycle. In order to balance in one spot I had to make continual adjustments and compensations to keep from falling over. Balance in our lives is the same way. Sometimes we need to devote a lot of attention to one area of our life (a sick family member, a special project at work, a vacation), and sometimes we need to pull back, re-direct our attention or make a different decision before we fall over. When I would lose my balance, did that mean I couldn’t get back on and resume balancing? Of course not. Life is like this. We just keep adjusting, redirecting and making better decisions. If we don’t-we fall and crash, and then we are forced to make a change.

We can’t judge how balanced our lives are by looking at one day, or even one week. We have to keep the big picture in mind and seek balance from within. On the whole, are you achieving what you want in each area of your life? If not, what kind of adjustments are you willing to make? What expectations are you trying to fulfill that are not your own? Ask yourself, “What is the best use of my time today?”, and decide to go for a walk instead of watching another reality show on TV.

Balance is not cookie cutter in any way. What is a balanced life for one person might be completely unacceptable to another. When we find balance on our own terms, from within, we replace conformity with honesty, judgment with kindness, turn “shoulds” into wants, and create a joyful, unconventional kind of balance that is perfect for us.

What Are You Resisting?

October 29th, 2008

If you are stuck somewhere in your life, the chances are you are stuck because you are resisting something. Many people grew up with one or two controlling parents or caregivers, and therefore learned numerous ways of overtly or covertly resisting being controlled. Who or what are you resisting?

RESISTING BEING CONTROLLED BY ANOTHER PERSON

Noah fell madly in love with Celia. It had been a long time since he had felt in love and he was delighted when it finally happened. Given that both Noah and Celia were in their mid 40’s, they didn’t want to wait long to be together. They had a whirlwind romance and got married within six months of meeting.

However, within a short time, the passion and in-love feelings were gone. What happened?

Celia is a person who loves to feel connected with others. She is also very afraid of disconnection with the people who are important to her. As a result, she wants control over people staying connected with her. She tries to have this control in very subtle ways. It’s not anything she does overtly - it’s more of a covert energy pull. It’s in her eyes, in her smile, in her hug.

People who are not resistant love Celia and feel loved by her. Her subtly pulling energy does not create fear in them of being controlled. In fact, the opposite happens - they see her as a very safe person and open their hearts to her. Most people will tell you what an open and loving person she is.

Noah, however, is a very resistant person. Having experienced the same kind of subtle energetic pull from his mother, he has a deep fear of being controlled. His unconscious response to Celia is to close his heart and withdraw to protect himself from being controlled by her pull. It’s more important to Noah to protect against being controlled than it is to be loving. Therefore, the more Celia pulls out of her fear of disconnection, the more Noah resists connecting.

Until being loving to himself and Celia is more important to Noah than protecting against being controlled, his heart will stay closed. If Celia were to pull back completely, he might open his heart again, but it would close as soon as she wanted connection with him. Just her wanting the connection feels to Noah like a pull. This relationship has no chance of regaining the in-love feelings until loving Celia is more important to Noah than protecting against engulfment. He is resisting the very thing that originally brought him joy.

RESISTING BEING CONTROLLED BY YOURSELF

The resistant pattern can continue on the inner level, creating much immobilization. For example, if one part of you is saying, “We’ve got to lose weight,” or “We have to get this place organized,” or “We’ve got to get the bills paid and the taxes done,” or “We’ve got to stop being late everywhere,” another part might be saying, “You can’t tell me what to do. I don’t have to do what you say.” It’s as if there is an inner controlling parent telling you what to do, just as your parents might have, and an inner resistant child resisting in the same ways you might have learned to resist when you were growing up.

If you are stuck in this inner pattern, it is important to realize that the same thing is true as when resisting another person: it’s more important to you to resist being controlled - even if it is by you - than to be loving to yourself. Obviously, if you are overweight, it would be loving to yourself - to your health and well-being - to lose weight. It would be loving to yourself to clean up your living space and get it organized, to pay your bills and get your taxes done, and to be on time. If being loving to yourself were your highest priority, you would do these things or whatever else you are resisting. You are stuck because resisting being controlled, out of a fear of losing yourself, is more important than being loving to yourself.

RESISTING BEING CONTROLLED BY GOD/SPIRITUAL GUIDANCE

This same pattern can be operating in reaction to spiritual Guidance. I’ve counseled many people who clearly hear the small still voice of Spirit guiding them, but refuse to listen out of the fear of being controlled by God. Others resist even the possibility that spiritual Guidance exists for them out of this same fear.

If you are stuck in your life, you might want to look at what you are resisting. You might want to explore the wounded part of you that is so afraid of loss of self - of being controlled, engulfed, smothered - that you resist all that is truly in your highest good. Making this unconscious pattern conscious is the first step to getting unstuck.

“D”

Article - Classy

“D”

I got an instant message from a woman that we will just refer to as “D” telling me that she was having trouble with her computer and that my wife had mentioned to her that I may be able to help. Most guys would be pissed that someone would volunteer them without out talking about it first, but I trust my wife’s judgment and never question her actions in such events. In many cases when my wife asks me to help one of her friends I do not need to know how or why and I get the job done as if I were getting paid to do it. Sick huh!

Anyway “D” and my wife talk often and she is very aware of my other websites. (adult) so of course the conversation leans in that direction. I was trying to help “D” understand what drives us to be so addicted to our fetishes and to my surprise it would seem I had met my match. Turns out that I under estimated “D” and she gave me a perspective that I had never even thought of.

I was trying to point out why a guy loves a short skirt, why legs attract attention, why a voyeur gazes relentlessly at the hem of a women’s dress and also why nothing is wrong with it. I told her about the game we play where we try to get caught looking at a woman’s thighs in hopes that she may play along and part them slightly while at the same time giving us a discreet smirk.

I told her that it’s not about the size or shape of the woman, but more about the time she took to make herself beautiful and sexy and now she is on display for guys like us to enjoy as we pass her ever so quickly on the city streets.

I told her that the excitement for a voyeur is not what he sees, it is the fact that he is not supposed to see it. I explained that when a guy is caught looking at a woman’s legs and with out warning the view gets better with the help of a slow “leg cross” or knees drifting apart or maybe even the all too famous “squat down and dig in your bag” move that the thrill is the more so about the unspoken sexual encounter you shared with your subject rather than seeing the soft cotton or silk panties she shared with you.

Turns out that “D” is a little smarter than I am and I was over explaining myself. She hit me back with her little fetish. You see, men are selfish sometimes and treat women as though they are in place only to entertain us. I agree that this is an awesome perspective on why females exist, but let me drop the hammer here and now. It turns out that “D” has a thing for Men in “pressed perfect” suits! No way! I also did a little more digging after this and with the help of google and some other female friends I found out that many women have this little secret and some even go on to love “men in uniforms”

Just as we share stories about a great pair of legs we saw on the bus, “D” went at far as to tell me about an experience she had watching a man buy clothes at a popular Men’sware store. How she not only helped herself to some really hot visuals but also approached her subject and helped him pick out and purchase 5 suits which he gladly modeled for her.

“D” You Sly Dog, You!

So be careful when you guys head out to girl watch. The tables could turn at any second and the hunter may end up being the hunted!

PS: We never did solve the computer problem.

The History of Solar, Part Four

October 28th, 2008

With the use of solar energy on the rise in today’s modern society, it’s safe to say that
consumers have come a long way in their choices of energy resources, coming further along in
the applications of solar power which was first introduced by Auguste Mouchout.
Now that technology is here to stay, you will find that solar energy is a resource that is
irreplaceable because as long as you have the sun to shine, consumers can create a cost
effective and environment friendly energy resource that is priceless in the long run with today’s
energy bills that are not only hurting the economy but moreso average consumers’ wallets.
From the by-gone days of the past when Albert Einstein first researched the photoelectric
effect, or when William Grylls Adam found out that he could create electrons; we patrons of
the 21st century add to technology the simple fact that we can now create our solar power
resources with our own two hands. We can make home made solar powered UV panels, solar
cells, and even windmills to run our homes or businesses on the sun’s energy, vastly improving
how we live today compared to when solar technology was first introduced as an energy saving
resource.

Today, you do not have to be a scientist or a Nobel Prize winner to use the scientific approach
of drawing energy from the sun to your advantage. Going off-grid or grid-intertied - using solar
energy means going green, and going green in today’s modern society means using the natural
resources that have been around for decades to preserve the earth and save money by going
solar.

The mentioned developers of the past have given us the knowledge and the technology of
energy resources for the present and the future. Solar energy was around back then and it is
around today. However, with knowledge comes improvement, and since the days of the
Romans and the Ancient Greeks, solar technology has advanced and improved for our benefit.

Brand Naming - Art, Skill, and Luck!

October 28th, 2008

A great name is like extra octane in a brand. A bad, boring or sound-alike name won’t necessarily kill a brands chances for success. In most cases however, it dramatically dilutes the brand equity and potency.

Do You Have A Name That Basically Sucks?

If so, shame on you. If you acquired it, I send my sympathy.

Should you change it? Yes. It will cost some bucks, but it’s also a great opportunity to get a lot of great attention and renewed momentum. Weigh it out, look at the cost versus the benefit and remember that change can be scary, but a lame brand can be scarier!

Birthing A Brand Name

The task of developing that killer name has become quite complex. For years, business owners and management named their offspring, then creative service firms and ad agencies jumped in, often with a sprinkling of college talent, finally, the general public added their wisdom in naming contests. I’m sure all have produced their share of brilliant names as well as some very scary ones. Now this field of art, science, skill, and luck has gone professional. Naming brands is big business and can come with a big price tag. Hire a professional naming company and expect a bill of $10,000-$100,000 or more before the graphic execution or production.

So What Is A Great Name Worth?

The answer: a lot. If your brand is properly nourished, it grows and has a long shelf life or history-do the math.

Not All Great Brand Names Cost A Lot

Nike(tm) is one of the best examples. Nike is Greek for victory and is also the Greek goddess of victory. The name came in a dream to Jeff Johnson, Nike’s first “real” employee, and replaced the original name of Blue Ribbon Sports. It beat out Phil Knight’s own name change idea of “Dimension 6.” However, the company did pay Carolyn Davidson, a graphic design student at Portland State University, $35 in 1971 to design the trademark “swoosh.”

When faced with the challenge of naming, start with your ideas and those of your staff. No matter what, even if the names you come up with stink, it’s a good creative exercise about defining your brand essence. If you have the budget, outside input and other naming solutions can also be a valid investment. Remember that the life and benefit of your brand name may last for years.

It will be plastered on lots of things including your market’s mind. Whatever you spend, divide it by the projected years of use and value. This same formula applies for investments in corporate identities and tagline. They are as valuable as a great employee or, piece of manufacturing equipment.

Whether you decide to outsource or to create on your own name, I suggest walking through the following preliminary exercise.

Ask Yourself The Following:

Who will ultimately decide the name? One person or a team? Whoever that is should be involved in the criteria-building process. What kind of brand are you naming? Company, consumer product, business service, or event? What is the expected life of the brand name? Does the name fit into a larger family of names? Will it be used only in the U.S. or will it go global? Remember that today “global” can mean the Internet too. Who is your primary audience for the brand names? Are you creating a new category or joining an existing one? If joining a category, what are your competitors’ names? What are the primary strategies for building your brand?

Once you’ve completed your basic criteria or framework, you can proceed with the grueling task of a name dump of endless possibilities.

Should A Name Be Literal And Descriptive Or Obscure And Emotional?

My tendency tilts toward obscure and certainly emotional, primarily because I’m a strong proponent of distinctive brands. However, I also believe each case is unique and sometimes brand names get passed down and changing them would take an act of Congress.

An Obscure Or Unfamiliar Word Can Be A Brand Home Run

Consider Apple(tm), Nike(tm), Google(tm), FUBU(tm), and Yahoo(tm). They all have visibility/frequency, brand-story telling communication, and brand performance. They are all hugely successful brands but, started as small companies.

Although not my favorite, literal and descriptive words can work in some brand naming situations. Generally, though proceed with caution because they can be more easily copied or imitated, leading to buyer confusion. Such confusion usually defeats the purpose of a sound brand.

If you have a big branding budget, you can salvage or sustain a boring, generic, or literal brand name with some other compelling messaging. Take, for example, Southwest Airlines. Their consistently creative and “on brand” advertising has transformed a somewhat nonexciting name into a great brand name. However, most companies don’t have the luxury of Southwest’s media budget or have not engaged a great ad agency like GSDM in Austin, Texas.

With that said, unless you have a big, endless budget, I say… Avoid like the plague:

Dumb Generic Names

Dumb generic names like Computer Solutions, Performance Printing or Innovative Technologies. I’m sorry if I’ve offended anyone, but these names will just make you spend more and work harder at building a brand. They don’t have legs and will likely drown in the sea of sameness. Avoiding generics names is also critical in consumer-packaged products, especially when private label copycats by mass retailers are showing up. Many times the name can be the strong point of difference.

Copycat Names

I also think copycat names or those that sound like a competitor or some other big brand are not worthy of much.

Names That Are Hard To Spell Or Pronounce

Finally a name should be something most people can spell and certainly pronounce.

Whatever route you take, be it working with a naming company, a creative consultant, rallying your troops and making it an internal company project, enlisting strangers in a naming contest, or combining several of these methods, you have created an extensive list of possible contenders. Now what?

More Big Naming Questions

How will the market receive the name? With supporting context, will the market get it?

Will it jive with your strategic positioning of the brand? Are there negative connotations or associations with the name? Is it available to use? On the earth? On the Web?

Once you’ve boiled down the list of prospects, you can organize nonscientific opinion polls (i.e., in shopping malls, bars, office gatherings). You can also conduct focus groups to test reactions further or you can do a pricey quantifiable study to gauge understanding acceptance, likability, or associations with your name prospect.

Is there a magic, fool-proof method for testing names? No. In fact, sometimes too much analysis just delays decisions and defeats the whole mission of naming your brand before the next decade. I recommend that you test a little, listen a little to people you respect, listen to your gut feelings, and proceed with a choice.

Great Brand Names

1) Are emotional

2) Stick in the brain

3) Have personalities

4) Have depth

While The Brand Name Is Very Important, A Brand Cannot Survive On Name Alone

The brand name and how the brand is executed are equally vital for a successful and sustained brand life. A great brand name can serve as the anchor to your cause, a symbol to your story, a point of difference in your marketplace, a memory trigger, or just one important part of your branding arsenal. Go get you a great one!

International Franchise Agreements and Language Issues

October 24th, 2008

When dealing with foreign investors and franchising in another country often language and interpretation of word meanings can get clouded. Additionally tenses or gender of words can change what a sentence says or means in an agreement. In franchising Internationally this becomes a real issue because of the number of potential countries an international US Based, Australian or European Based Franchisor might franchise in.

As we expanded our company into other markets we found this to be extremely problematic due to the fact that a particular country may have different dialects and issues in their own language itself, not to mention the English versions of the words and their meanings. One issue we immediately noticed when trying to deal in multiple languages is that even the topics in the table of contents were at issue. So, I addressed this issue by inserting this clause into our international contracts for franchising our business model;

7.20 Headings and Table of Contents

The headings and Table of Contents used in this Franchise Agreement are for purposes of convenience only and shall not be used in constructing the provisions hereof. As used in this Franchise Agreement, the male gender shall include the female and neuter genders, the singular shall include the plural and the plural, the singular.

Although this did not solve all the issues it did in fact assist us in some of the issues and helped us from causing ourselves litigation issues over miss interpretations due to language barriers, mistakes or cultural differences in basic word meanings and sentence structures. Perhaps you will consider this in 2006.
